I have always loved French onion soup, but it has always been missing something no matter how good it was or where I had it.  So I decided to start the year off by taking French onion soup and making it a Fat Boy original by completely changing it while still leaving enough of the traditional elements there for its roots to be recognizable.  How is that possible you ask?  Well, lets break down traditional French Onion Soup first and see what it had to have to be recognized.

The Fat Boy Summer Road Trip 2014 Part 2: On the Road Day 12

June 26, 2014 Drew Fleisher

Day 12 started with us leaving the Palazzo headed North for Reno.  It was coming up on lunch time, so we stopped by John Mull's Road Kill Grill in North Las Vegas for some award winning BBQ.  Tucked back in an old North Las Vegas neighborhood it isn't easy to find the Road Kill Grill, but this place knows how to BBQ.  Huge portions and great prices rule the day, and the friendly folks in this shop will have you coming back for more.  Click the link to read more about this amazing spot and our 12th day on the road.

I was looking for a place to meet up with an old friend for a beer and was intrigued by Stickmen's website so we decided to give it a try.  Located right on the East side of the lake in Lake Oswego, in a historic building next door to the Lake Theatre Stickmen is a brewpub that features a full menu, but specializes in Japanese skewers called Yakitori.

Fat Boy Review: BottleKeeper Brewtis

In September a couple of cousins went to Fundable with the idea for a new way to protect their beer from the heat and elements.  They called it BottleCamo, but after realizing that this might be seen as trying to encourage hiding beer from the authorities rebranded as BottleKeeper, and after months of production and customs delays finally have their pre-orders hitting the doors of folks who backed their project.  Follow the link for pictures and details on why this is how all of my bottles will be carried from now on.

My little brother and a cold pint of Red Ale.  What better way to spend a summer evening?

My little brother and a cold pint of Red Ale.  What better way to spend a summer evening?

While on our trip through southern Oregon we stopped in Ashland to visit my brother, and to see his new house.  Since it was nearing the dinner hour after we saw his home I asked where we should eat.  He and his girl friend love a pizza place in Ashland called Creekside Pizza Bistro, and of course the kids quit listening after he said pizza, so we decided to give it a try.

Dinner Tonight: Chicken Cutlet with Cheesy Grits

Chicken Cutlet with creamy, cheesy grits.

Chicken Cutlet with creamy, cheesy grits.

I was looking for something to make with the amazing Stone Ground Grits that Carrie brought me back from her trip to South Carolina last week, and decided that since the kids didn't like shrimp I would need to avoid the old standby.  I decided on a pounded and breaded chicken cutlet with creamy, cheesy grits that I made with smoked cheddar.  AMAZING!  Talk about Fat Boy Heaven on a plate, this was it.
