Serendipity ala Groupon brings Indian pizza home for dinner tonight

Curry & Crust is right by the MAX stop at Hawthorne Farms

Curry & Crust is right by the MAX stop at Hawthorne Farms

I was trying to decide what I wanted to do about dinner tonight when Groupon popped up telling me there was an offer nearby.  I pulled off of Cornell and up came an offer from Curry & Crust, an Indian restaurant with a twist...pizza(?!?) of all things.  I had seen the name driving past a few times but had never had a chance to stop before so I decided to give the offer a try.

I got my large Butter Chicken Pizza to go and took it home.

I got my large Butter Chicken Pizza to go and took it home.

The pizza was topped with Home made sauce with  Onions, Green Peppers, Cheese, chicken  and topped with makhani sauce.  I have to say that first of all Butter Chicken is one of my favorite Indian dishes.  Putting it on top of pizza is a gimmick for sure, but one that works.  The flavor was smooth and creamy, with just enough curry and chili to balance the butter and make this a winner.  They got me there with the intrigue of pizza, but I'll be going back in to try a more traditional Indian meal with a variety of dishes after the flavor and quality of this pizza.

If you want a unique pizza experience or are just looking for great Indian food give Curry & Crust a try.

Reviewing the VQ

One of the long standing places to meet and eat in SW Portland has always been the "VQ" (veritable quandary) at 1st and Jefferson is classic old time Portland charm in the middle of the downtown area. While much has changed since it opened in 1971, it has lost none of its charm.

I had today's special, The Italian Meats sandwich, and it did not disappoint. Pepperoni, Salami, and an amazing Coppocollo served with fresh Parmesan and mozzarella on a focaccia roll. It is everything you hope an Italian sandwich will be. Served with a mountain of their famous hand-cut fries it was well worth the $14 price tag.

Carrie went with the classic VQ Burger, 1/2 pound of ground round topped with white cheddar, lettuce, pickled veggie blend and a sweet-basil aioli. This burger is always a safe bet.

If you are in Portland and want to see what dining was like before the hipsters took over the food scene, the VQ will show you the way.
