Nike chooses All-Star weekend to change the sneaker game

February 14, 2016 Drew Fleisher
The Jordan Horizon Premium

The Jordan Horizon Premium

I'm not a big sneaker head, but Nike chose this weekend to blow the shoe game to pieces twice.  First with the new Jordan's pictured here.  Dubbed Horizon Premium they are a cross between a classic Jordan design and hand beaded Native American moccasins.  Truly the most unique and creative design to ever ship under the Jordan brand.

Then, they release a new app just for sneaker heads called SNKRS, a combination storefront and online community promising access to the latest dropping shoes.

Review: A.B.V. Public House

March 22, 2015 Drew Fleisher
image.jpg

Carrie and I finally had a chance to have lunch at ABV Public House in Hillsboro, and we were impressed by the selection of both food and beverages on offer.  Founded originally as a tap house for Main Brew, the home brewing supply store adjacent to them ABV has quickly become a draw by themselves for anyone looking for hard to find bottled beer, a wide range of taps to fill the ubiquitous Northwest "Growler" from, and increasingly for those looking for a remarkably great meal.

image.jpg

I had the Chicken Hash, which was made from Pulled Confit Chicken Thigh, Potato Hash, Onions, a Sunny Side Farm Egg + Romesco Crema.  Not the kind of dish you expect to find at a small pub that doesn't even have a sign out front.  While I prefer my hash to have crispier potatoes this was a flavorful and satisfying bowl that is sure to please anyone.  The chicken was moist and bursting with flavor while not being as greasy as confit dishes can sometimes find themselves.  The egg was perfectly cooked and when broken open over the hash provided the perfect richness to blend with the Crema to flavor the potatoes.  If you like hash of any kind stop in and give this one a try for brunch.

ABV Public House is typical Portland.  Unmarked, unknown, and uncommonly good.  A little piece of Fat Boy Heaven in a tiny strip mall between the gun range and the home brew store.  It doesn't get anymore Portland than that.  You can find ABV online here, or just go visit them at:

Update: April 1st, 2015

We went back a couple of weeks later with the kids to get another picture of how ABV really behaved on a weeknight.  While food quality was just as great, service dropped severely.  At 6pm on a Wednesday night we had a 40 minute wait to be seated, even though there was an open table clearly visible from the podium.

It took nearly another hour before appetizers (Fried Cheese Curds) were brought out, and 29 minutes past that we finally got our meals.

The fried cheese curds are served in a large bowl.  Plenty to share and perfectly breaded and prepared.

I ordered the 50/50 Burger, while Carrie went with the Green Chile Burger.  Both were excellent.  Both kids ordered ABV burgers, classic 1/4 pound cheese burgers.

The 50/50 Burger has a patty that is 50% Beef and 50% Bacon.  This is topped with bacon, blue cheese, and grilled onions.  Amazing.

Carrie's Green Chile Burger was huge, and she said full of flavor.

Review: Bowpicker, historic fish and chips

October 17, 2014 Drew Fleisher

On the Northern edge of downtown Astoria, Oregon, across from the Maritime Museum is an old tramp boat sitting on a trailer, with lines around the block.  When you get closer it is easy to understand why: you can smell the greasy goodness of fried fish as only Bowpicker serves it up.

Fat Boy Whisky Review: Pendleton 1910 Canadian Rye Whisky

September 27, 2014 Drew Fleisher
image.jpg

Pendleton Whisky is named after the Pendleton Round-Up, one of the most prestigious rodeo events in the world. The event has been held during the second week of September each year since 1910, and brings over 50,000 tourists to the city of Pendleton, Oregon in the scenic Columbia River Gorge.

Pendleton 1910 12 Year Old Whisky was initially crafted to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the rodeo. The whisky is made from a mashbill composed entirely of rye grains, which are mashed, fermented and distilled in Canada. Following distillation, the whisky is brought to Hood River Distillers in Oregon, which finishes and the whisky in its own casks before bottling it at 80 proof. This whisky sets itself apart from most Canadian Ryes by being a small batch rather than a blend. This opens up the potential for variety from year to year, but also removes the consistency that large blends are famous for.

Pendleton 1910 Whisky has been aged for twelve years and has a slightly sweet aroma, with hints of butterscotch, light oak and tobacco. The aroma gives way to notes of toffee, black pepper, chewy leather, honey, chili peppers and vanilla on the palate. The medium finish is well-balanced, with a touch of spice and sweetness. On the whole this is one of the smoothest Canadian whiskys I have ever tasted.

The whisky earned a score of 90 points from Wine Enthusiast, and earned the Silver Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2012. Here at Fat Boy Heaven we give 1910 a score of 92.

Review: Famous Dave's BBQ Shack, Cedar Hills

March 6, 2014 Drew Fleisher
The BBQ Shack is casual BBQ done right

The BBQ Shack is casual BBQ done right

My buddy Mark called and asked if I had time to have lunch with him today since he was up in my part of town, and I love to get together with old friends, so we had a late lunch. Famous Dave's opened this little BBQ shack on Cedar Hills BLVD. In Beaverton, so we decided to see if it was as good as their restaurant in Tualatin.

On the Road Review: Mo's in Cannon Beach, OR

Mo's Chowder House is an Oregon Coast landmark

Mo's Chowder House is an Oregon Coast landmark

When I was growing up in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, our family made at least one trip out to the beach every summer.  We would take coolers of food to save money, but dinner before heading home was always at Mo's.  I have had clam chowder all over the country, but nothing says seaside dining like Mo's.
